Lewiston 5-year-old drowns in canal

LEWISTON — A 5-year-old Lewiston boy drowned Friday when he tumbled into a canal and was swept away by the current, Lewiston police said.

Andrew Latham was playing near his home with another boy when he crawled under protective fencing and slipped down an embankment, police said. They were unsure why the boy had crawled under the fence.

Andrew fell into the water at about 1:30 p.m. and his body was discovered downstream two hours later.

The canal system, which is fed by the Androscoggin River, is used to generate hydroelectric power for some Lewiston mills.
