BRUNSWICK — A man armed with a semiautomatic assault pistol held police at bay for 30 minutes in a park Friday afternoon, firing at least 20 shots in the air before turning the weapon on himself.
Steven Hedrick, 39, shot himself in the head and was taken to Maine Medical Center in Portland, where his condition was listed as critical.
No one else was injured in the incident at Nathaniel Davis Park, about 100 yards from the apartment where Hedrick, a house painter, lived alone.
Friends at the scene said Hedrick was upset about a break-up with his girlfriend and the death of a friend next door.
Police arrived at the park in response to a call about a man with a gun, said Deputy Chief Richard Mears.
“He fired a number of indiscriminate shots out there. We tried to approach him and contain the situation,” Mears said. At that point, he said, the man shot himself.
