MACHIAS — Area schoolchildren have participated in National Hospital Week activities at the Down East Community Hospital by providing drawings around the theme “Count on Us to Care.”

Winners in the kindergarten-first grade category were: first, Carroll Perry III, kindergarten, Harrington Elementary School; second, Shandi Rossi, grade T-one, Cherryfield Elementary School; third, Katie Gardner, kindergarten, Rose Gaffney School, Machias.

Winners in the grade two-three category were: first, Emmanuel Knowles, grade three, Whiting Village School; second, Matthew Leroy, grade three, Jonesboro Elementary School; third, Kim Berry, grade two, Elm Street School, East Machias.

The winners were awarded certificates and cash prizes of $5 for first place, $3 for second place, and $2 for third place during ceremonies held at the hospital on Tuesday, May 8, by Judith Spencer, materials manager for the hospital.

The posters will remain on exhibit at the hospital throughout the weeklong observance of National Hospital Week.
