PARIS – A police affidavit alleges that a double murder in West Paris in July involved illegal drugs and unpaid debts.

A 35-page affidavit was unsealed Wednesday after a court hearing for 32-year-old Duane Christopher Waterman of Sumner, who is charged with murder in the deaths of 50-year-old Timothy Mayberry of West Paris and 43-year-old Todd Smith of Paris.

Mayberry and Smith were found at Mayberry’s home on July 26. They had been shot multiple times.

According to the affidavit, Waterman admitted he owed Mayberry money for a drug deal. The affidavit also said that shell casings found at the murder scene matched unspent bullets found at Waterman’s home.

Waterman pleaded not guilty Wednesday. He is being held at the Oxford County Jail.
