Sullivan woman escapes house fire, but pets perish

SULLIVAN – An investigator with the State Fire Marshal’s Office is expected to be on scene today to investigate the cause of a fire Saturday that destroyed a single-family home.

Deputy Fire Chief Wayne Milne said Sunday the fire began around 2:30 p.m. at a home on Quarry Road in North Sullivan. No one was injured, but a dog, two cats and a ferret died in the fire.

The home belonged to Danny and Jammie Tracey. Jammie Tracey was home at the time.

It was unclear Sunday if the home was insured.

Milne said it is believed a neighbor reported the fire. When firefighters arrived, the house was ablaze.

Milne said details of the fire remained sketchy Sunday, but it appears that Jammie Tracey was upstairs in the house when the fire started.

“She said when she first came down she could see a little something,” he said. “When she went out through the door she turned to try to get the dog out, but the dog didn’t come with her. There was so much fire down there that she couldn’t get back in.”

The fire may have started in the kitchen-dining room area.

About 40 firefighters from Sullivan, Hancock, Franklin and Sorrento were on the scene for about three hours. No one was injured.

Because there are no hydrants in Sullivan, firefighters had to ferry water from a nearby quarry.

The incident remains under investigation.
