New Hampshire nips Maine in Tri-State golf

AUGUSTA – For the third straight year, the top 14 golfers from New Hampshire have led their state to victory in the Tri-State Championships, by a half-point over Maine.

New Hampshire finished with 161/2 points, Maine 16, and Vermont 91/2. The event was shortened to 18 holes of match play Sunday after rainfall wiped out Saturday’s matches.

Each match consisted of a threesome made up of one player from each state. A player could earn up to two points by beating the other two players in his group.

Each team consisted of four senior players (age 55 or older) and 10 players of any age.

Ron Brown and Alan Bouchard both earned two points for Maine in the early seniors matches. Ben Daughan, Jeff Wass, and Mark Plummer also picked up two points each.

It was Craig Steckowych, playing in the No. 2 spot for New Hampshire, sealed the victory by beating Maine’s Jason Gall and splitting with Vermont’s Jeff Davey to gain a point and a half and put his team over the edge.

Also competing for Maine were Ricky Jones (1 point), Cash Wiseman (11/2 points), Keith Patterson (1/2 point), Scott Dewitt, Marc Siewertsen (1 point), Nate Nealey (1/2 point), and in the senior division, Paul Pelletier (1 point) and Jim Quinn (1/2 point).
