Bomb threat empties Presque Isle courthouse

PRESQUE ISLE – Local police are investigating a bomb threat Tuesday at the District Court that turned out to be a false alarm, according to Sgt. Bill Campbell of the Presque Isle Police Department.

A person called the courthouse at approximately 11:57 a.m. and made the threat, the sergeant said Tuesday.

Campbell, who is supervising the investigation, declined to describe the voice of the person who made the call or what was said because the case is still under investigation.

The person who made the threat faces up to five years in prison for the Class C felony.

Police arrived at the Riverside Drive building minutes after the call and blocked off traffic.

Court security evacuated the building and conducted a thorough search. No bomb was found, Campbell said.

Approximately one hour later, at 1 p.m., security officers reopened the building.

Court was in session during the day Tuesday, Campbell said, but no cases were interrupted because court was not in session when the call was made.

An official at the courthouse said court reconvened in the afternoon, but declined to say which cases were being reviewed Tuesday. The official said District Court does not provide press releases and directed questions to the Police Department.

Investigating Officers Roger Ellis and Stacey Mahan are working on the case.
